How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone
Your iPhone fills up with copies faster than you notice. A screenshot saved twice, a photo you sent and received back, ten frames of the same cat. Some of these are true duplicates. Most are not, and that difference decides which tool works.
This guide covers the built-in method first, then what it misses, then how to deal with similar photos and bursts.
Exact duplicates versus similar photos
A duplicate is the same picture stored more than once. A similar photo is a different picture of nearly the same moment: a burst, a retake, three attempts at a group portrait.
Apple’s tool targets the first kind. The second kind is usually where the space goes, because every shot is a full-size file.
Delete duplicates with the Photos app
Apple added duplicate detection in iOS 16, and it works the same way on iOS 17, 18 and 26.
- Open Photos.
- On iOS 17 and 18, tap Albums and scroll to the bottom. On iOS 26, tap Collections and scroll down.
- Under Utilities, tap Duplicates.
- Tap Merge next to a set, or select several sets and tap Merge.
- Confirm.
Merging keeps the best version, which is the highest-quality one, and combines details such as captions, keywords and favorite status. Albums that held a discarded copy now point to the one you keep. The discarded copies move to Recently Deleted.
If you do not see Duplicates, your library may have none. Photos also analyzes your library in the background, mostly while the phone charges and is idle, so a new or freshly restored phone can take a while to show it.
What the built-in tool misses
Duplicates only lists photos that are identical or nearly identical, such as the same file imported twice. It does not group a burst, a retake, or two shots taken a second apart. Those are different photos as far as the app is concerned, so they never appear in the list.
It also does not tell you which of several similar shots is the sharpest. You compare them yourself.
Clean up similar photos and bursts
You can do this by hand. Open the burst or the series, look for blinks, blur and awkward expressions, and keep one. For a real burst, open it, tap Select, and mark the frames you want to keep. Photos discards the rest.
For everything else, sort the library by moment. Scroll a day at a time and delete the extras. It works, but across years of photos it takes hours.
Lisse automates the grouping. It finds near-identical photos on the phone, such as bursts and retakes, and puts them in a group. In each group it circles the best shot: your favorite first, then the sharpest or best-composed one. You review the group and delete the rest. The analysis runs on your iPhone, nothing is sent to the developer, and there is no account.
Scanning and sorting are free, and so are your first 25 deletions. After that, deleting needs Lisse Premium, at $29.99 per year with a 3-day free trial or $4.99 per week.
Check the ones you are not sure about
If a group holds a photo you care about, keep it. Lisse never deletes anything on its own, and iOS asks you to confirm every deletion.
You can also use Lisse’s month-by-month swipe view. Swipe left to delete and right to keep. It is a good way to go through a long library without opening every album.
For photos you want to keep but not carry on the phone, Lisse can archive them to your own Google Drive first. It verifies each copy before anything is deleted.
What happens to deleted photos
Deleted photos do not free space immediately. They move to Recently Deleted and stay there for 30 days. To get the space back now:
- Open Photos and go to Albums (iOS 17 and 18) or Collections (iOS 26).
- Under Utilities, tap Recently Deleted. You may need Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Tap Select, then Delete All, and confirm.
Be careful with iCloud Photos. If it is on, your library is synced across your devices, so deleting a photo on the iPhone deletes it on your iPad and Mac too. Recently Deleted works the same way across devices. Empty it only when you are sure.
Frequently asked questions
Does merging duplicates delete my photos?
It deletes the extra copies and keeps one, along with the details from the others. The removed copies go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, so you can still recover them before they are gone for good.
Why is the Duplicates album missing on my iPhone?
Either you have no duplicates, or Photos has not finished analyzing your library. Analysis happens in the background, mostly while the phone is charging and not in use. The album also needs iOS 16 or later.
Will deleting duplicates on my iPhone remove them from iCloud?
Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. A deletion on one device applies to all the others signed in with the same Apple Account. The photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days everywhere, then disappear.
